What should be included in a product comparison for a mobile steam cleaning machine?

Why a written comparison beats a sales call

When you buy a mobile steam cleaning machine, the machine itself is only part of the cost. A unit that cannot be driven through your parking deck, refilled from a normal tap, or run on the battery pack you already own will pull your team onto downtime you did not budget for. Putting every candidate on the same sheet of paper, before the first call, is how procurement teams avoid that trap.

The comparison sheet below follows the same field order used in the PowerDe cleaning equipment specifications, so the numbers you collect from different suppliers can be read side by side without translating one vendor's wording into another's.

1. Mobility and footprint

Start with how the machine reaches the vehicle. PowerDe's driving-style models — PWD01, PWD02 and HMW2 — are self-propelled units rated for autonomous driving, with a footprint of L1275 mm × W570 mm × H1185 mm. Their height is the number most often missed: a unit that fits a service lane in width can still be rejected by a mezzanine, a pipe rack, or a low garage door.

Compare that with a hand-pushed unit such as the PowerDe HMW3, listed at L1150 mm × W520 mm × H1030 mm. It is shorter and narrower, and it is moved by an operator instead of a motor, so the trade is labour for clearance. In your comparison table, record the tightest width and the tightest height on your site, then write the machine's own figures next to them.

  • Mode of movement: autonomous driving or hand push — and who supplies the power for each variant
  • Length, width and height of the machine as listed, plus turning clearance in your layout
  • Whether the machine can be stopped and driven again during a job without a shutdown cycle

2. Cleaning modes: dry steam, wet steam, hot water

The mobile active-water line offers three modes: hot water, dry steam and wet steam. In a PowerDe PWD02 steam cleaner, that combination covers rinsing loose road film with hot water, lifting packed grease with wet steam, and finishing with dry steam when you want the surface to leave the bay already dry. A fixed or hand-pushed model such as the HMW3 is listed with dry steam and wet steam only, so hot-water pre-rinse disappears from the workflow.

Write down which modes you will actually use on a normal shift before you pay for a machine that offers more of them. If your workload is interior and engine-bay work, dry steam matters more than the hot-water tank. If you wash exterior surfaces daily, the hot-water mode and the high-pressure water gun do most of the work.

3. Power source and battery supply

This is the field where two models with the same name behave very differently. The PWD02 page lists 220 V working voltage with a replaceable 455 V mobile battery. The HMW2 is listed at 48 V mobile battery and states that batteries are customer provided. The HMW3 runs from a 48 V battery. In other words, the same catalogue can ship a machine you plug into shop power, a machine you supply a battery for, and a machine with an integral mobile pack.

For your comparison, list the working voltage, whether the battery is included in the quoted price, and whether you already stock that battery platform and charger on site. A price that looks lower because the battery is excluded only makes sense if your fleet already carries a compatible pack.

4. Heating, tank and water supply

The mobile PWD02 and HMW2 are specified with 4.5 kW semiconductor heating and a 60 L clean water tank; the hand-pushed HMW3 uses the same 4.5 kW PTC semiconductor heating with a 50 L clean water tank. All three take tap water through a 4-point internal-tooth joint, so a standard site tap feeds them without a special water treatment line.

Use tank volume to work out how often the operator stops to refill, and use heating power to understand how long the machine needs before the first lance of steam. On a fixed installation the story changes again: the PowerDe HW02 is listed at 6 kW heating power with an 80 L SUS304 tank, which suits a permanent wash point rather than a unit you drive between bays.

5. Safety design and protection features

PowerDe's cleaning equipment pages describe leakage protection, short-circuit protection, high-temperature protection, high-voltage protection, water-shortage protection and high-voltage explosion protection. The list, rather than a count, is what you should compare — suppliers package these differently, and the wording on the datasheet is what you can hold them to at commissioning.

Ask each supplier which protection trips the machine, what the operator sees when it trips, and how the unit is reset. Water-shortage protection in particular decides whether a dry tank becomes a burnt heater or simply a stop.

6. Throughput and the real cost per wash

Do not compare machines on a single "washes per hour" claim. Compare them on the elements that drive that number: the cleaning method (the mobile models use a high-pressure water gun with nozzle), the vacuum option, the tank size, and the distance from wash point to water point and power point. On the HW02 the vacuum option is listed as a vacuum cleaner with a flat nozzle feeding a sewage tank, which matters when interiors are part of the job.

Fill in, for each candidate: minutes of operator time per vehicle, number of refills per shift, and how many machines your current layout can run at once. Multiply by the wages you actually pay. That figure, not the sticker price, is what the comparison should decide.

7. Total cost of ownership and service

Add the items that appear after the invoice: battery replacement or battery purchase, consumable nozzles and hoses, and the lead time for the PTC heater and control parts. A driving-style machine with a replaceable battery pack is cheaper to keep running when your team already maintains those packs; a fixed 220 V unit is easier to plan around when power is guaranteed at the wash point.

Ask PowerDe, as the manufacturer of record on the datasheet — Shenzhen PowerDe Automation Precision Equipment Co., Ltd, Shenzhen — which parts it stocks for the model you shortlist, and what it supplies for the variant you order. Battery-included and battery-excluded variants of one model can carry different service paths.

8. Customisation and supplier support

If no catalogue model matches your layout, PowerDe lists engineering services around its cleaning line, including customized steam cleaning equipment and steam cleaning equipment product development. Bring your measurement sheet, your vehicle mix and your site's tightest clearance to that conversation; a specification built from your data is a faster and cheaper brief than one built from a standard model you later have to work around.

Questions to put in writing before you order

  • For the exact model and variant you are quoting: is the battery included, and at what voltage?
  • What is the machine's total height including handles and any mounted accessories, against my site's lowest obstruction?
  • Which of the listed cleaning modes are standard and which are options on this variant?
  • What is the lead time, and what is the spare-parts route for the heater, gun, hose and nozzle on this variant?
  • Can the tank be refilled from my existing tap without an adapter, and what fitting is supplied?
  • If my layout needs a change to the standard configuration, what is the engineering path and the cost of the change?

Work through those ten fields with every shortlisted machine, and the comparison stops being a debate about opinions. If you want a configuration built around your own measurements and vehicle mix, the PowerDe cleaning equipment team can be reached through the site's contact page at sales@powerde.net.
