Why The Safety Question Comes First
A CNC workshop is a poor place to improvise. Coolant mist coats floors and cabinets, swarf is sharp and scattered, chip conveyors and guard doors have pinch points, and electrical cabinets sit inches from standing water. Steam adds heat and moisture to that mix, so the safety check has to happen before the machine is switched on, not after something has gone wrong. The written pre-start list below is the one to put on the board by the bay.
Isolate The Machine Before Anything Else
- Put the controls in the state your lockout procedure requires and tag them out. A guard door that opens on its own while a nozzle is in the work envelope is an injury, not a cleaning problem.
- Confirm the spindle, axis drives and tool changer cannot be energised from the pendant or from another station on the same line.
- Clear loose swarf and chips with a brush, magnetic sweeper or vacuum first. Water on a bed of loose chips makes a slurry that goes into ways, wipers and coolant returns.
Then set the boundaries of the wet zone with tape or a barrier, so a second crew cannot walk a cart through the area while someone is holding a hot lance.
Protect The Electrical And The Precision Surfaces
Walk the machine and list every opening that must be covered or kept dry: encoder and scale covers, motor fan vents, junction boxes, pendant cables, connector panels, and the gaps around door seals. Anything with a nameplate and a cable gets a cover or a wide-avoidance rule.
Then decide the distance for the nozzle. Fixed Steam Cleaning Machine PowerDe HW02 is the listed unit for a bay with floor power: the detail page records 220 V supply, 6 kW heating power, steam at 160 degrees C and vapour pressure of 0.8 MPa. That combination strips paint and forces moisture past seals if the jet is held close and still, so keep the nozzle moving and hold a gap. The page also lists leakage, short-circuit, high-temperature, high-voltage, water-shortage and high-voltage-explosion protection; those features reduce risk, they do not replace the isolation step.
Where the bay has no utility run, the battery-powered mobile steam cleaning machine units from the PWD and HMW series move through narrow aisles and avoid trailing cables across a walkway. Battery and no-battery variants are listed separately, so confirm runtime and charger details with us before specifying the fleet.
Set The Floor And The Drainage
Steam cleaning uses far less water than a hose, but the water still has to go somewhere. Confirm the drain route, squeegee as you work, and never let run-off reach a cabinet base, a cable trunking joint or a wall base. Wet floors around a machine are a slip risk with swarf in them, which is worse than either problem alone.
Crew footwear matters here: closed, oil-resistant soles, gloves that cover the wrist for hot work, and eye protection whenever a lance is under pressure. State the requirement in the procedure rather than relying on what people usually wear.
Make The Machine Safe To Run Again
The cleaning job is not finished when the surfaces look clean. Before power is restored, check that:
- No water is standing in the work envelope, in chip pockets, around way covers or at the base of the column.
- Every cover you fitted has been removed, and no temporary covering has been left inside the machine.
- Way surfaces, wipers and the coolant return have been wiped dry and inspected.
- The area around the cabinet and the pendant is dry before the operator closes the door.
Define what counts as clean on three or four reachable surfaces and have a lead sign those points off, then fix the interval so the cleaning happens inside a planned changeover. The industrial steam cleaning equipment range is specified for exactly this kind of planned shutdown work.
Confirm The Fit Before You Specify
Shenzhen PowerDe Automation Precision Equipment builds this equipment in house and supports customized configurations. The current HW02 listing documents vehicle and facility cleaning applications, so if your plan is machine-tool cleaning in a CNC bay, send us the machine layout, the residue you are fighting and the shutdown window, and we will confirm the model and write the sequence for that bay with you.
