How can steam cleaning reduce manual work on factory conveyors?

In most plants, conveyors get cleaned during the one window when the line is already stopped. Workers bring out scrapers, brushes, degreaser drums, rags and a bucket, and they spend that window on the belt frames, side guides, drive rollers and the floor underneath. If you are trying to plan maintenance around that reality instead of fighting it, our industrial steam cleaning equipment is built to shorten the scrubbing part of the job and take most of the chemicals and the soaking out of it.

The manual load on a conveyor cleaning shift

Read any conveyor cleaning checklist and you will find the same pattern. The belt itself is usually brushed or scraped first, then the frame and guards, then the rollers and the transfer points where product drops, then the spill containment and the walkway. On a food, packaging or chemical line this is the part of the shift that nobody wants to own. It is wet, it is greasy, it requires bending and reaching, and it is the task that gets shortened when the restart window is tight.

The physical work does not scale with line length either. A long conveyor has more guards, more idlers and more spill points, and a line that runs three shifts generates residue around the clock. That is why teams that clean by hand end up scheduling cleaning as a separate event, and why that event tends to slip.

What steam changes about the cleaning step

Steam works on the two things that make manual conveyor cleaning slow: the residue itself and the amount of water needed to move it.

  • Heat softens grease, oil, sugar, starch and adhesive residues on belt frames and guides, so the operator wipes or rinses instead of scraping.
  • High-pressure steam drives loosened residue off corners, welds and guard brackets that a brush cannot reach comfortably.
  • Because the cleaning medium is mostly vapour, each pass carries far less water than a hose. In rooms with open electrical enclosures, drives and bearings, that lower water load matters.

Our high-pressure steam cleaning machine series covers this style of work with a fixed 220 V unit rated at 6 kW heating power, 160° steam temperature and 0.8 MPa vapour pressure, with an 80 L SUS304 tank and a choice of dry steam, wet steam or vacuum pickup. The unit is on casters with handles, so one operator moves it from one conveyor section to the next without a second person. We also build mobile steam cleaning machines with dry-steam, wet-steam and hot-water modes for teams that need to move the machine across a yard or between buildings.

A practical workflow that reduces manual work

The machines do not remove the need for a plan. What they do is compress the labour inside that plan. A sequence that works well in practice:

  • Dry the area and clear loose product with a dry method before any steam passes, so the steam is working on bonded residue rather than bulk debris.
  • Select the mode for the surface: dry steam on electrical enclosures, drive housings and bearing areas; wet steam or hot water on frames, guards and spill trays.
  • Work top down, starting at the highest guard and ending at the floor, so rinsed residue does not land on work already finished.
  • Use the vacuum pickup mode where standing water is a hazard, especially around drives, junction boxes and walkways.

In a plant running this sequence, the number of operators on the conveyor task usually drops because each pass does more: heat lifts the residue, pressure moves it, and the vacuum removes it, instead of three separate manual steps.

Where PowerDe fits if you are specifying the equipment

Shenzhen PowerDe Automation Precision Equipment has been building automation and cleaning equipment in Shenzhen since 2007, and the cleaning range is designed and manufactured in-house rather than resold. That matters when your conveyor layout is unusual. We take customized steam cleaning equipment requests, including mode selection, tank and power configuration and accessory sets matched to the residue you actually run into, and our engineering services cover product development and hardware testing if you need a configuration proven on your line before it is delivered.

If you are comparing options, send us your conveyor type, the residue you are fighting, and the cleaning window you have. Our team will map the equipment and the cleaning sequence to that window, and tell you honestly whether steam is the right fit for your line.
