Start with the atmosphere the process actually needs
Perovskite, organic photovoltaic and related thin-film processes are sensitive to water, oxygen and organic vapours, so the first line of the criteria should describe the atmosphere inside the chamber rather than the machine that creates it. On the glove box spin coating equipment we supply, the glove box is specified for the removal of O2, H2O and organic gases, with a working atmosphere of H2O below 1 ppm and O2 below 1, an overall leakage rate below 0.05 vol% per hour, and pressure control at ±15 mbar. Those four numbers are the sort of items to write into the document, together with how each one will be measured, by whom, and with which instrument.
Write recovery time into the criteria as well as the steady-state value. A chamber that reaches specification overnight but not between two runs will not support a shift of samples, and the difference only becomes visible when the acceptance run is timed with a stopwatch.
Express coating quality as a number you can repeat
Spin coating is judged on two variables that have to be stated separately: the speed the spindle can reach and the uniformity of the film that results. Our published specification gives spin coating speeds of 300–8500 rpm for silicon wafers up to and including 4 inches and 300–6000 rpm above that size, with spin coating uniformity of ±3%. A useful acceptance criterion repeats the same recipe on the same substrate several times and compares the measurements, because a single good wafer proves nothing about process stability.
Agree the measurement method before the machine arrives — where thickness is measured, how many points per substrate, and which tool. If the two sides measure differently, the ±3% figure in a datasheet and the reading on a bench ellipsometer will never match, and the disagreement becomes a commercial argument instead of an engineering one.
Describe the work cycle, not just the hardware
Researchers judge this class of machine by how little it interrupts them. For the coating station our specification lists a touch screen plus PLC interface and an external dimension of 400 × 400 mm for the spin coating system; the chamber itself measures 1950 mm × 780 mm × 900 mm, with 220 mm glove hole rings and a 304 stainless steel main body. Criteria written from the workflow side ask practical questions: can one operator transfer a substrate, run a recipe and remove the sample without breaking the atmosphere; are the recipes recalled between shifts; can the interface be read while wearing gloves. Each question has a yes-or-no answer that can be tested during a witnessed run.
Cover the support items that decide uptime
Our product page lists a water probe with a testing scope of 0–500 ppm, an equipment failure rate of ≤1%, a product pass rate of ≥99%, and a power supply of 220 V / 50 Hz for a usage environment of 15–30 °C. Turn each of these into an acceptance line with the condition it assumes: what consumable gas is being used, what the room temperature is, what substrate and recipe are in the run. Reliability figures that are not tied to a condition cannot be verified, and unverifiable lines are the ones that cause disputes at handover.
Finish the list with the items that are not measurements: the utilities the site must provide, the accessories included in the shipment, spare parts held on site, the operator training session, and the response route when something fails. A criterion that names the responsible party and the date is worth more than a paragraph of general expectation.
Put the criteria on one page per stakeholder
The laboratory lead, the process engineer and the buyer rarely read the same document. One page of measured conditions for the laboratory, one page of recipe and uniformity checks for the process engineer, and one page of handover, training and service terms for the buyer keeps every party accountable for the part they own. Send that structure to the supplier before the quotation is fixed, so that the machine offered and the machine accepted are the same machine. Our team can review an existing checklist against the specification of a thin-film solar equipment build and state which lines our equipment can be witnessed against and which belong to the customer's own facility.
