What are common specification gaps in semiconductor process equipment projects?

A quotation that looks complete can still hide half the project. Buyers of semiconductor process equipment often compare numbers — force, temperature, vacuum level, cycle time — and assume that matching those numbers means matching the machine. Problems start after delivery, when a tolerance that nobody wrote down turns into a scrapped batch or a machine that cannot run the plant's shift pattern.

Below is how we structure equipment specifications at Shenzhen PowerDe Automation Precision Equipment, and the gaps we most often see in incoming RFQs for lamination, bonding and debubbling projects.

Gap 1: Output is quoted as a rate, not as a duty cycle

"Cycle time: 20 seconds" says nothing about how the machine behaves over an eight-hour shift. On our 3D surface vacuum bonding machine, the listing pairs a 20-second cycle with an uptime of at least 98% measured on a 5.5-inch soft-to-hard test. Those two figures belong together: a headline cycle time without a stated uptime, a shift length, and a changeover allowance is not comparable between two suppliers.

In your specification, state the shift pattern you expect the machine to serve, the changeover frequency between product sizes, and who carries the cost of an unplanned stop. That gives both sides the same calculation for capacity.

Gap 2: Tolerances without a measurement condition

A fit tolerance is only meaningful if both parties agree how it is measured. For membrane-electrode work, our 7-layer membrane electrode hot press bonding machine lists a fitting error of no more than 0.2 mm together with a working temperature of up to 150 °C, a press pressure of 2 t, and a production cycle of at least 1.5 pieces per minute. The tolerance is tied to a temperature, a stack thickness, and a material set.

When a specification omits the reference conditions, two machines can both "meet 0.2 mm" and produce different results. Write down the stack structure, the material and its thickness, the temperature at which alignment is measured, and the gauge used.

Gap 3: Process windows left as single points

Buyers commonly send one set of process values: one temperature, one vacuum level, one pressure. A machine that runs only at that exact point is fragile. Our 5-layer membrane electrode vacuum hot pressing bonding machine is specified with a working vacuum of no more than 60 Pa and a fitting error within 0.2 mm — values a process engineer can set, not a fixed recipe.

Ask for the adjustable range on each process parameter, and for the recipe function. On our TGV alignment packaging machine solution, selectable recipes are used to reduce alignment bubbles; the same capability lets a factory return to a proven parameter set after a trial instead of re-engineering the process each time.

Gap 4: Product geometry not described

"5–15 inch products" is not a geometry. Flat glass, curved glass and flexible film need different mechanisms. Our semi-automatic roller bonding equipment covers 5–15 inch touch glass, LCD and LCM with CCD vision and a UVW platform, while large curved-surface bonding is handled by a dedicated arc mechanism with CCD alignment and roller bonding on the automatic alignment large-size curved surface lamination machine.

In your RFQ, state whether the surface is flat or curved and its radius, whether the material is rigid or flexible, the panel size range, and the thickness range including the thinnest part you will handle.

Gap 5: Utilities and chamber details left to the site visit

Power quality, compressed air, water and exhaust decide whether a machine can be switched on the day it arrives. Our 3D curved glass hot bending forming machine includes oxygen monitoring in four nitrogen-filled chambers — atmosphere control is part of the machine, not an accessory. For the high-pressure debubbling machine, the listing gives a tank of 1,000 mm diameter by 1,200 mm in SUS304 stainless steel, which sets both the footprint and what you can load.

Confirm on paper before ordering: supply voltage and frequency at your plant, air pressure and dryness, water inlet requirements, floor load and footprint including open doors, and what your exhaust or nitrogen supply must provide.

Gap 6: Automation level not defined per station

"Automatic" is where most misunderstandings start. Our range spans manual loading, semi-automatic bonding for smaller lots, and full lines, including the automatic production line for car display devices built for instrument and central multimedia displays, and the fully automatic aluminum plate plus LCD laminating machine for 60–86 inch ultra-thin LCD glass bonded to aluminium plate.

Specify loading, unloading, alignment, inspection and marking one station at a time, and say which stations you want to keep manual at first. A station-by-station split also lets a line be extended later without replacing the equipment you already run.

Gap 7: Customisation and verification left out of the contract

Several machines in our catalogue were built to a customer's process, such as the 86-inch roller type bonding equipment for OLED modules and the roll-to-roll magnetron sputtering coating line in our thin-film range. Custom work needs a written test plan: what is trialled, on whose material, and what result counts as acceptance.

Our engineering services cover hardware testing and product development for customers whose process is not yet fixed. That work belongs in the specification as a milestone before series manufacturing, not as a discussion after the machine is built.

A short checklist before you send an RFQ

  • Target capacity stated as uptime, shift length and changeover allowance, not only cycle time
  • Tolerances with reference conditions and the measurement method for each one
  • Adjustable range required on every process parameter, plus recipe storage
  • Product geometry: flat or curved, rigid or flexible, size and thickness range
  • Site utilities and chamber atmosphere requirements
  • Automation defined station by station, including what stays manual
  • Test and acceptance criteria written into the order

If your project is still at the stage where parameters are not fixed, send us the product drawings and target capacity, and we will review them with an engineering team and confirm which configuration fits. Details are on our contact page, or write to sales@powerde.net.
