What questions help compare cleaning equipment for car-wash work areas?

When you are choosing cleaning equipment for a car-wash work area, the brochure specifications are the easy part. Almost every supplier quotes a steam temperature and a pressure figure. What separates one machine from another is how those numbers behave in your own bay — under your water supply, your power supply, your floor drainage and your queue of waiting vehicles. The questions below are the ones worth putting to every supplier before you request a quotation.

1. What is my actual power supply at the bay?

Start here, because this single answer removes most of the market. A fixed 220V steam cleaning machine such as the PowerDe HW02 is rated at 6 kW of heating power, which is enough to hold steam at around 160°C with a vapor pressure near 0.8 MPa. A machine in that class needs a properly earthed 220 V circuit with adequate capacity and protection; plugging it into a shared outlet that also serves a vacuum pump, a light wall or an air compressor is how operators end up tripping breakers mid-shift.

If your site cannot supply a dedicated circuit, ask instead about a battery-powered mobile steam cleaning machine. The driving-style units in the PowerDe range run on a 48 V battery pack and are built for indoor garages and narrow outdoor parking spaces where running a cable is impractical or unsafe. Note that the same models are usually listed in two variants — one with the battery included, one without — so state clearly on your purchase order which one you need.

2. Does the machine switch between dry steam and wet steam?

A single steam setting forces you to compromise. Dry steam carries less moisture, so it lifts grease and grime from an engine bay, a wheel arch or a door sill without flooding the surface, and the panel is close to dry when you move on. Wet steam carries more moisture and is the better choice for soaking loose mud off a lower body or a floor. A dry and wet steam cleaner lets the operator pick per task instead of running one setting for everything, which shortens cycle time and reduces the wipe-down that follows each job.

Ask the supplier to demonstrate both modes on a dirty panel and let your own operator run it. The difference you should see is moisture load on the surface, not marketing language.

3. Is the water inlet tap water, and what fitting does it use?

Check the inlet specification, not just the tank size. The HW02 takes tap water through a 4-point internal-tooth joint with a 1/2 inch connection, and carries an 80 L SUS304 tank. Two questions follow from that: first, does your site water need softening or filtration before it enters a heated boiler, and second, who provides the adapter between the site hose and the machine inlet? Fitting mismatches are one of the most common reasons a new machine sits in a corner for the first week.

Tank material matters as well. A stainless tank resists the corrosion that shortens the life of a mild-steel tank in a wet bay, and an 80 L volume decides how often you refill on a busy day rather than how the machine looks in a catalogue photo.

4. What protection does the machine have, and can you show it on the panel?

A steam machine combines high temperature, high pressure, electricity and water in the same enclosure, often operated by staff who were not trained on it. Ask which protections are built in and where they are indicated. The HW02 lists leakage, short-circuit, high-temperature, high-voltage, water-shortage and high-voltage-explosion protection; the driving-style HMW2 and PWD02 listings state leakage, short-circuit, high-temperature, high-voltage and water-shortage protection. Ask to see each indicator on the control panel, and ask what the machine does — not just what it warns about — when water runs low while the heater is hot.

5. Will it fit my bay, and can it move where I need it?

Take the footprint and the movement method into your floor plan before you order. The HW02 is specified at 1,200 × 800 × 1,200 mm including handles, and it is a fixed unit on castors. The hand-pushed HMW3 is listed at L1150 × W520 × H1030 mm, a narrower body that suits tighter aisles. If vehicles have to be driven to the machine, a fixed unit is fine. If the machine has to travel between bays, up a ramp, or into a narrow indoor garage, movement method becomes the deciding spec, and that is where the driving-style units are positioned.

6. What is included, and what is missing from the datasheet?

Ask for the full accessory list in writing: lance, nozzle set, hose length, brush attachments, vacuum function where offered, charger output and battery capacity. Published pages often omit steam hose length, runtime per charge, weight and noise level, and those omissions are exactly the numbers your operator will ask about on day one. Get them quoted, and get the warranty terms, spare-part availability and the support contact — including the language support will be given in — before the order is placed.

7. Can the supplier build to your process, not just sell you a model?

Some buyers need a tank size, an enclosure layout or a mode combination that no catalogue model offers. Shenzhen PowerDe Automation Precision Equipment Co., Ltd. was established in Shenzhen in 2007 and works across cleaning equipment R&D, manufacturing, system integration and customization, alongside its automation and engineering-services work. If your bay needs a different configuration, that capability is the reason to send a written specification rather than accept the nearest stock model — see the contact page to submit your bay layout, water and power conditions and the vehicle types you wash.

A shortlist you can test in one visit

  • Power available at the bay, dedicated circuit or not, and the socket type — settled before any model discussion.
  • Dry steam and wet steam modes demonstrated by your own operator on a dirty vehicle.
  • Water inlet type, fitting size, tank volume and tank material confirmed against your site water.
  • Protection functions shown on the panel, with the machine's response to low water stated.
  • Footprint and movement method checked against your floor plan and ramps.
  • Full accessory list, runtime, charger output, warranty and spare parts in writing.

Take the same six answers from every supplier and the comparison stops being a contest of brochure claims. The machine that fits your power supply, water and floor layout will outperform a higher-specification unit that never leaves the corner it was delivered to.
