How can a facility plan cleaning for vehicle engine bays?

A feed truck leaves the plant clean and returns coated in dust, caked feed residue and grease on the wheels and chassis. Steam handles that buildup without the hose volumes that flood a yard, but it is heat and pressure applied to painted steel, rubber hoses, wiring and bearings. Before the first wash of a fleet, we recommend the buyer and the wash crew confirm six items in writing. Each one changes how the job is set up, and every answer should match the specification sheet of the machine actually delivered — the Fixed Steam Cleaning Machine PowerDe HW02 in our fixed 220 V configuration, or one of our mobile units if the wash bay is shared with other vehicles.

Confirm the steam temperature and pressure against the surfaces being cleaned

Our HW02 delivers steam at 160°C and 0.8 MPa vapor pressure. Those figures are why baked-on feed film and grease release from panels and wheels. They are also why the operator needs a working distance and a nozzle pattern for each surface class. Before use, confirm three things on your own fleet:

  • Which panels carry paint, decals, adhesive trim or plastic covers, and what distance and angle the crew uses on them.
  • Which seals, air lines, wiring looms and bearing points are treated as no-spray zones.
  • What the crew does on the first truck of a new model — a small test panel, checked after drying, before the whole unit is washed.

Write the agreed distances and patterns onto a laminated card at the wash point. Crews do not consult manuals during a shift; they follow the card.

Confirm the power supply and the wash-bay circuit

The HW02 is a 220 V machine with 6 kW of heating power. Before delivery, have your electrician confirm that the wash bay circuit, protection device and cable run support that load continuously, and that the outlet is close enough to avoid long extension cords in a wet area. If your site only has 380 V distribution or the bay is outdoors, raise it with us at the quotation stage rather than after the machine arrives. For bays without a fixed supply at all, our driving-style units such as the PowerDe PWD02 steam cleaner run on battery and move with the vehicle.

Confirm the water source and the tank arrangement

The HW02 carries an 80 L SUS304 tank and takes tap water through a 4-point internal-tooth joint (1/2 inch). Two confirmations follow. First, can the bay supply tap water at that fitting, and is the supply reachable for the truck length being washed? Second, what does the crew do when the tank empties mid-fleet — refill on the job, or run a planned refill between shifts? Feed haulers are washed in batches, so this scheduling detail decides whether the machine looks adequate or undersized in daily use.

Confirm dry steam or wet steam for each task

The HW02 switches between dry and wet steam. Dry steam carries the heat with less free water, which suits engine-compartment areas, electrical zones and interior surfaces where a soaked bay creates a slip risk. Wet steam carries more water onto the surface, which suits heavy caked residue on wheels, chassis and underbody panels. Confirming which mode the crew uses on which part of the truck, before the first week, prevents the common complaint that steam "did not clean" when in fact the wrong mode was applied to a heavily soiled surface. Our automotive cleaning equipment pages list which of our models offer dry steam, wet steam and hot-water modes, so match the mode set to your fleet mix.

Confirm the protection functions and how the crew reacts to them

The HW02 page lists leakage protection, short-circuit protection, high-temperature protection, high-voltage protection, water-shortage protection and high-voltage-explosion protection. A protection function is only useful if the operator knows what the machine does when it triggers and what they are expected to do in response. Agree these rules with your safety officer before launch: who resets what, which trips always mean "call maintenance", and the rule that no one opens the machine or defeats a protection under any production pressure. Water-shortage behaviour matters most on a fleet schedule, where a dry tank is a routine event rather than a fault.

Confirm drainage, runoff and site rules

Steam washes produce far less water than a hose, but the runoff still carries feed residue, oil and grit. Confirm where the wash point sits relative to your drainage, whether your environmental or biosecurity rules require the runoff to be collected, and whether the bay has a slope and collection channel already in place. Feed transport often runs under biosecurity protocols, so the wash itself may need to be logged per vehicle; agree who records the wash and what evidence the record must contain.

What to send us before we quote

Send the vehicle types and typical soil, the number of units washed per day, the available supply voltage and water fitting, and your drainage and biosecurity constraints. Our team will map those to a machine and to a written wash procedure for your crew, and tell you plainly where a fixed unit and where a mobile battery unit is the better fit.
